Water resources management
Elaboration of the Lielupė, Venta and Dauguva river basin districts management plans
Project duration: 2008 December – 2010 October
Aim:
Elaborate the Lielupė, Venta and Dauguva river basin districts (RBD) management plans, according to the Water Framework Directive (WFD) requirements. The elaborated plans will contribute to reduction of water pollution in Lithuania and neighbouring countries as well as the Baltic sea. The project is also meant to increase public awareness and institutional capacities to administer water bodies on the ground of RBD.
Project activities:
- Characterize the Venta, Lielupė and Dauguva RBD according to the WFD requirements;
- Perform water use and cost benefit analysis for water supply in the key RBD;
- Set water protection goals in the Venta, Lielupė and Dauguva RBD and prepare measurement programs to reach them;
- Elaborate the Lielupė, Venta and Dauguva RBD management plans;
- Strengthen institutional capacities to administer water bodies on the ground of RBD;
- Raise public awareness and involvement into water management on the ground of RBD.
Baltic environmental forum is performing the project activities, related to public awareness and involvement into water management:
- Gather information on existing public involvement into water management practices, analyze international and national projects’ recommendations and propose mechanisms to improve public involvement in Lithuania;
- Identify the stakeholders in the Venta, Lielupė and Dauguva RBDs;
In autumn 2009 inform public/ RBD coordination boards on elaborated RBD mamagement plans and measurement programs’ projects;
- Provide RBD measurement plans and management plans‘ projects for valuation to stakeholder institutions and coordination boards;
- Generate informative brochures and video material on water protection and elaborated Venta, Lielupė and Dauguva RBD management plans;
- Introduce the final Venta, Lielupė and Dauguva RBD management plans and mesurement programs for general public and organize 3 conferences for stakeholder institutions.
